Indie Introduction – Judith Briles

Tuesday, March 15, 2016

Dr. Judith Briles is the author of 34 books. Her book, Author YOU: Creating and Building Your Author and Book Platforms was the Book of the Year in Publishing/Writing in the IndieFab award at the American Library Association’s meeting in 2014. The CrowdFunding Guide for Authors and Writers was released last summer and her next book will be How to Avoid Book Publishing Blunders, Bloopers and Boo-Boos. She’s the founder of AuthorU.org and is known as The Book Shepherd.

What brought you to write Author YOU: Creating and Building Your Author and Book Platforms?

It was an evolution. I was working on another book and just had to write this one. I was giving a workshop and I asked my authors two questions on crowd-funding for self-publishers that they couldn’t answer so I decided that I needed to write a book to teach authors these skills. The book came together very fast.

Are you going back to the other (older) book?

Yes, I’m working on that one now and it should be out in May. It’s called How to Avoid Book Publishing Blunders, Bloopers and Boo-Boos.

This book is based on firsthand experience and helping other authors and publishers for many years. Everyone makes mistakes and if someone tells you they haven’t; they are crazy.

What is your favorite role or responsibility right now?

I love the creation process of the book and bringing that through the whole path to the publication. How are we going to publish? What avenues should we go down? How are we going to market this book? Those are questions I love answering; I love doing all of it. My passion is teaching and sharing information with authors.

Biggest takeaway for the newbie self-publisher:

Don’t try to do it alone. It is great to work with someone that has been through it before, that can keep you away from the common mistakes and some un-common mistakes. It could save you thousands of dollars and countless hours of time.
