Every November an international phenomenon, spurred on by a love for human creativity, challenges thousands across the globe to try their hand at writing a novel. National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) presents a somewhat untraditional, incredibly exciting, and definitely challenging approach to championing creative writing.
Before we get too far into what it takes to publish your NaNoWriMo book, let’s talk about what NaNoWriMo is and why you should participate.
What is NaNoWriMo?
During the month of November, people all across the world embark on a month-long journey to complete a 50,000-word novel by November 30.
That’s 30 days.
One masterpiece of creativity.
NaNoWriMo is a nonprofit movement that holds creative potential and its transformative powers in the highest regard. Through challenges like this and other programs, they help create a platform where an aspiring global community of writers can freely share their voice, find their creativity, and mold new worlds.
The challenge was first thrown down in 1999 and has seen an increase in worldwide involvement ever since. In 2017 alone, more than 400,000 people participated. From its inception many NaNoWriMo novels have been published, including nationally recognized books like Water for Elephants, The Night Circus, and The Darwin Elevator.
NaNoWriMo was established in 2005 as a nonprofit built on the belief that everyone has a story inside. To motivate people to embrace their creativity and bring their stories to life, NaNoWriMo challenges participants to write a 50,000-word novel during the month of November.
While the challenge gives NaNoWriMo a fun and untraditional twist on writing, the real purpose behind the month-long event is to support and inspire those around the world to share their voice. NaNoWriMo, along with its subprograms (Camp NaNoWriMo, Young Writers Program, Come Write In, and “Now What” Months) champion the power of the human mind to make the world a better place.
Why Participate in NaNoWriMo?
The better question—Why not?
Sure, a 50,000-word book is a formidable task; however, having the courage to begin a novel is already a step in the right direction. And what better time to put your story to paper than when you have this kind of support?
- 402,142 participants, including 95,912 students and educators in the Young Writers Program.
- 972 volunteer Municipal Liaisons guided 646 regions on six continents.
- 1,195 libraries, bookstores, and community centers opened their doors to novelists through the Come Write In program.
- 65,962 Campers tackled a writing project—novel or not—at Camp NaNoWriMo.
If you’ve been waiting for the right encouragement to begin your novel, now is the time.
Once you make the choice to move forward, you’ll discover NaNoWriMo offers all kinds of additional resources for inspiration and plenty of information on local writing events. They also have a fun tracking system complete with achievement badges you can proudly share online.
Not to mention, we’ll be there to help you out along the way. They say it takes a village. And when you publish your NaNoWriMo novel you become part of a larger literate global village dedicated to helping you complete your novel. The NaNoWriMo community motivates you to write your book; the IngramSpark community motivates you to publish your book.
